EPF and basic pay
Basic pay is assumed to be 50% of the CTC: ₹20,00,000 a year, ₹1,66,667 a month. The employee EPF at 12% is ₹20,000 a month, ₹2,40,000 a year. The employer pays the same amount, which sits inside the CTC. The monthly basic is above the ₹25,000 wage ceiling. If the EPF is limited to the ceiling it falls to ₹3,000 a month and the monthly in-hand pay under the new regime becomes ₹2,62,619, ₹28,696 more.
How the income tax works out
The last rupees of the taxable income are in the 30% slab that starts at ₹24,00,000, which is 31.2% with the 4% cess. This is the top slab.
With only the ₹50,000 standard deduction and the EPF under 80C, the old regime tax is ₹9,15,720, against ₹7,12,920 under the new regime. The old regime only catches up if you can claim a further ₹6,49,999 of deductions or exemptions (HRA, home loan interest, 80D, NPS and similar), ₹7,99,999 in all with the EPF.
