How this is calculated
Income tax
Resident rates for the tax year 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, from the IRD: 10.5% to NZ$15,600, 17.5% to NZ$53,500, 30% to NZ$78,100, 33% to NZ$180,000, 39% above that. Each slice of income is taxed at its own rate.
ACC earners' levy
1.75% of earnings up to NZ$156,641, so the most it can be is NZ$2,741.22. It is taken from pay together with PAYE.
KiwiSaver
The employee rate you pick is a percentage of gross pay. The choices are 3.5% (the default and the minimum), 4%, 6%, 8% and 10%. Your employer pays at least 3.5% on top, which is shown as information and is not part of your take-home pay. See the KiwiSaver guide.
Student loan
12% of every dollar over NZ$24,128 a year (NZ$464 a week) from your main job.
Independent earner tax credit
NZ$520 a year for residents earning NZ$24,000 to NZ$66,000, reduced by 13 cents for each dollar over NZ$66,000 and nil at NZ$70,000. Tick the box only if you qualify: it is not available if you or your partner receive Working for Families, an income-tested benefit or NZ Superannuation.
Weekly PAYE tables
The yearly figures are worked out on the whole year. Employers use the IRD PAYE tables (IR340 for weekly and fortnightly pay) for each pay period. This site's method reproduces the weekly table exactly, so a weekly payslip should match to the cent when the tax code is M or ME.
Not included
Secondary jobs and secondary tax codes, tailored tax codes, bonuses and lump sums, holiday pay, other income, deductions, student loan repayments on other income, and anything that applies to non-residents.
Worked examples: take-home pay on NZ$60,000, NZ$80,000 and NZ$100,000.
This calculator is general information. It uses the IRD tables and official pages listed on the Sources page and does not take your circumstances into account. Your payslip, employment agreement or tax assessment may differ. Rates as at 2 November 2026.
