How this is calculated
Two views of the same pay
The yearly figures work out your tax as if you lodged a return on this income alone. Each pay cycle then shows what an employer withholds under the ATO withholding tables, which can be a little different. The gap is settled when you lodge your return.
Income tax and offsets
Resident rates for 2026-27 from the Income Tax Rates Act 1986: nil to $18,200, 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000, 45% above that. The low income tax offset (Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 s 61-110 and 61-115) takes up to $700 off the tax.
Medicare levy and HELP
The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income, reduced for low incomes using the single-person thresholds. A study and training loan repayment uses the 2026-27 marginal table: nothing up to $69,528, then 15 cents for each dollar over it. See the HELP repayment guide.
Withholding
Each pay is converted to a weekly equivalent and run through the coefficient tables in Schedule 1 of the Taxation Administration (Withholding Schedules) Instrument 2026, using scale 2 if you claim the tax-free threshold and scale 1 if you do not. A HELP component from Schedule 8 is added when you tick the HELP box.
Super
Employer super is 12% of salary, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 a year. If you choose "included", the amount you enter is treated as a package and the salary is the package divided by 1.12.
Not included
Foreign residents and working holiday makers, deductions, other income or a second job, salary sacrifice, fringe benefits, the Medicare levy surcharge, family and senior Medicare levy reductions, and bonuses paid separately.
Worked examples: take-home pay on $80,000, $100,000 and $120,000.
