How this is calculated
Federal income tax
Wages less the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household) is taxable income. For a single filer the rates are 10% up to $12,400, 12% up to $50,400, 22% up to $105,700, 24% up to $201,775, 32% up to $256,225, 35% up to $640,600, 37% above $640,600 of taxable income. The calculator uses the rate schedule printed in Rev. Proc. 2025-32, not the IRS Tax Table, and applies no credits.
Social Security and Medicare
The employee share of Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500. Medicare is 1.45% of all wages. The Additional Medicare Tax of 0.9% applies to wages over $200,000 for single and head of household filers and over $250,000 for married couples filing jointly (the calculator assumes the salary is the household's only wage).
State tax
States with no tax on wages show $0. States with one flat rate or rate bands use that state's 2026 rates and its standard deduction or personal exemption, and where the state has them, exemption credits, surtaxes and income-based deduction rules. Employee payroll contributions that the state requires, such as disability insurance and paid leave, are added as separate lines. New York City residents can add the city tax. Other city, county and school district income taxes are not included.
Not included
Federal and state credits such as the child tax credit, dependents, itemized deductions, pre-tax payroll deductions (401(k), health insurance), the 2025 to 2028 deductions for tips, overtime and seniors, second jobs and other income. Monthly and two-week results are the yearly result divided evenly.
